Cammalleri out for six weeks

Posted by GameSetMatch on 3rd February 2010

Mike Cammalleri, the Montreal Canadiens’ top scorer, will be out for about six weeks with a knee injury.

The team announced Tuesday that he won’t need surgery.

Cammalleri was injured during a 3-2 overtime loss Saturday in Ottawa when he fell awkwardly into the boards after being hit by Anton Volchenkov.

Cammalleri has a team-leading 26 goals and 48 points in 56 games. The Canadiens will be without him for the first time this season when they host the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night.

Vancouver will have defenseman Sami Salo back after he missed four games with a groin injury.

Kopitar key as Kings edge Rangers for seventh win in row

Posted by GameSetMatch on 3rd February 2010

Anze Kopitar’s slick short-handed goal was exactly what everybody expects from the Los Angeles Kings’ leading scorer. His steady defense against Rangers star Marian Gaborik was a whole lot more surprising.

The Kings needed both dimensions of their dynamic young leader to extend their biggest winning streak in 18 years, and Kopitar repeatedly came through on both ends of the ice.

Kopitar scored late in the second period and Jonathan Quick made 20 saves in the Kings’ seventh straight victory, 2-1 over punchless New York on Tuesday night.

Ryan Smyth scored with 8:46 to play for the Kings, who are on their longest winning streak since early 1992, when Wayne Gretzky’s Kings won a franchise-record eight straight. The Great One famously made hockey a hot ticket in Hollywood for a few years, and Kopitar’s talented young Kings are trying to rekindle the affair.

Phaneuf’s feisty debut highlights Leafs win as Giguere shuts down Devils

Posted by GameSetMatch on 3rd February 2010

Dion Phaneuf made quite a first impression with his new fans in Toronto.

Physical on the ice and chatty in the dressing room between periods, the rugged defenseman helped lead the Maple Leafs to a 3-0 win over the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night.

Toronto snapped a six-game losing streak in Phaneuf’s debut.

“It was a great honor to put this jersey on and to be a part of this organization,” he said. “The fans were unbelievable. To be on this side and playing in front of them wearing this jersey, it meant a lot to me. It was a very special game in my career.”

Jean-Sebastien Giguere also made the most of his Maple Leafs debut. He finished with 30 saves and became only the second Toronto goalie to record a shutout in his first outing. Ed Belfour beat Pittsburgh 6-0 on Oct. 10, 2002.

Caps set franchise mark with 11th win in row; Bruins’ skid hits 8

Posted by GameSetMatch on 3rd February 2010

Washington Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau finds it hard to believe his club has won a franchise record 11 straight games. Boston Bruins coach Claude Julien feels the same about his team’s eight-game losing streak.

In what loomed as a mismatch between the highest and lowest-scoring teams in the NHL, the Capitals finally took their first lead in the third period and beat the Bruins 4-1 on Tuesday night.

The Capitals’ record winning streak of 10 games set 26 years ago had been surpassed.

“It’s pretty mind boggling,” Boudreau said. “It’s a good milestone for these guys and you could see when they got the lead we finally started playing better.”
