Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals, and maybe even Montreal’s inability to score more goals in a dominant second period, drove Canadiens goalie Carey Price to a couple of piques of frustration.

Ovechkin scored his second goal of the game with 8:51 left, sending Washington to a 6-3 victory Wednesday night and a 3-1 lead in the Eastern Conference series.

Ovechkin opened the scoring at 8:10 of the first period with the Capitals’ first power-play goal of the series. Mike Knuble tied it at 2 with Washington’s second short-handed goal in two games with 6.3 seconds left in the second.

Boyd Gordon, who returned to the lineup to score a key short-handed goal in Game 3 after being a healthy scratch, set up Knuble on a 2-on-1 to draw the Capitals even despite being outshot 33-18 to that point.

The morning after a thrilling comeback victory and a goaltender switch, Washington Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau was still undecided on his goalie for Game 3 of the first-round playoff series in Montreal on Monday.

In Saturday’s 6-5 overtime win over the Canadiens, Boudreau pulled Jose Theodore just 7:58 into the game after he allowed the first two Montreal shots to go in.

Semyon Varlamov relieved Theodore, and after the Capitals fell behind 4-1 in the second period, they rallied to tie the game before Nicklas Backstrom won it 31 seconds into overtime.

“I’m sure we’re still going to use both goalies,” Boudreau said. “Whether [Varlamov] plays Monday or [Theodore] plays Monday I think they’re both going to play again.”

Washington Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau finds it hard to believe his club has won a franchise record 11 straight games. Boston Bruins coach Claude Julien feels the same about his team’s eight-game losing streak.


In what loomed as a mismatch between the highest and lowest-scoring teams in the NHL, the Capitals finally took their first lead in the third period and beat the Bruins 4-1 on Tuesday night.

The Capitals’ record winning streak of 10 games set 26 years ago had been surpassed.

“It’s pretty mind boggling,” Boudreau said. “It’s a good milestone for these guys and you could see when they got the lead we finally started playing better.”

Forty minutes of Detroit domination wasn’t enough to subdue the streaking Washington Capitals, whose offense finally came to life deep in the third period.


Nicklas Backstrom and Dave Steckel scored 46 seconds apart late in game, rallying the Capitals past the Red Wings 3-2 Tuesday night for their fourth straight victory.

“They pretty much took it to us the whole game,” Steckel said. “I mean, that’s the bottom line. I thought we could have played better, but to their credit, they prevented us from playing pretty well.”

Until a tripping call on Todd Bertuzzi set the Capitals’ comeback in motion.

Alex Ovechkin says he was joking when he told a reporter over the weekend that he could be out more than a month.

The Washington Capitals star practiced lightly Monday and said he would actually miss about a week.

He hasn’t played since leaving a Nov. 1 game against Columbus after he was hurt in a scrum. The Capitals said last week that Ovechkin, whose 14 goals and 23 points lead the team, was week to week with what they called an upper-body problem.

Ovechkin, who was quoted by Yahoo! Sports on Saturday night as saying he could miss four or five weeks, insisted his left shoulder was not affected by the still unspecified injury, animatedly flexing the joint and telling reporters with a smile, “The shoulder’s fine, see?”
